قصة الكتاب :
“The Sound and the Fury” is a novel by written by the American author William Cuthbert Faulkner. Faulkner was born in the State of Mississippi and lived in Oxford County in New Albany. He dropped out of school early in his life and spent his youth as a homeless person. However, he was able to rise to fame after he wrote this novel before he reached the age of 30. His novel is regarded as one of the most prominent novel in American literature, and among the world’s hardest novels to read. It remained so despite the fact that Faulkner wrote an appendix to the novel 16 years after its first publication in which he clarified the characters and their connections. The Appendix is currently available in all new editions of the novel.
“The Sound and the Fury” is separated into four distinct sections. The first three sections are narrated from the perspective of three brothers who describe the same events. The story revolves around the Compson family that consists of three brothers, Quentin, Jason and Benjy, as well as a sister called Candace, a careless father who reads a lot in classical books and who is alcoholic, and a mother who insists on holding on to superficial social traditions. In her old age she has become an abusive hypochondriac. Finally, there is Dilsey Gibson – the matriarch of the servant family.
The central character in this novel is Candace (Caddy), who is the central woman in the life of her three brothers. Her first brother is cognitively disabled, the second commits suicide due to his sister’s out-of –marriage pregnancy, while the third one steals his sister’s money. The sister has been previously married to a German officer in Paris and sends the money to her daughter. Her uncle steals the money and his niece finds the money which she steals and runs with a circus worker. The older brother sells the house and fires the old servant.
The fourth section of this novel is narrated by the author who wants to reformulate time which is only four days, but he goes deep into time and into future. Critics believe that excessive violence in this novel was employed in order to clarify the importance of holding on to virtues through exposing violence and evil.
